SBS Board non-executive Director
The SBS Board of Directors is responsible for deciding the objectives, strategies and policies to be followed by SBS in performing its functions. This ensures that SBS performs in a proper, efficient and economical manner, and with the maximum benefit to the people of Australia.
Applications are invited to fill a non-executive Director vacancy on the Special Broadcasting Service Corporation (SBS) Board. This is a part-time position, with a term of up to five years.
The selection criteria for this position is set out in the Special Broadcasting Service Corporation (non-executive Director—Selection Criteria) Determination 2024
Applicants must demonstrate substantial experience or knowledge in at least one of the following fields:
- the media industry;
- broadcasting and digital media;
- digital technologies in any sector other than the media sector;
- business or financial management;
- creative arts;
- educational content creation;
- corporate governance, including managing large and/or complex operations in the private, public or not-for-profit sectors;
- cultural industry and/or cultural policy, including its administration; and
- industrial relations, including an understanding of interests of employees.
Additional desirable experience
- Substantial experience in advertising and / or commercial media, or in digital innovation, will also be highly desirable.
Applicants must possess all of the following:
- demonstrated high-level leadership and vision, and the ability to articulate a clear direction for an organisation;
- financial literacy;
- high-level judgement;
- the highest standards of professional and personal integrity;
- an understanding of, or the ability to credibly represent, the communication needs of Australia’s multicultural society, including ethnic and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities;
- an understanding of the media environment, in particular the role of the SBS as a multilingual and multicultural and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander broadcaster, its Charter and its place within the Australian community; and
- demonstrated commitment to high standards of governance.
Due regard will also be paid to the Board’s gender, diversity and geographic balance, in the interests of ensuring that the SBS Board reflects the diversity of Australia’s multicultural community and audience.

An independent Nomination Panel will assess applicants and provide a shortlist of at least three recommendations to the Minister for Communications. The Government will then make a recommendation to the Governor-General, who is responsible for appointing non-executive Directors to the SBS Board.
