How we found the Board solution for an AustralianSuper fund in Liverpool.

A case study that demonstrates our ability to identify outstanding board talent, no matter how challenging the brief, was our successful assignment for Australian Super.

In 2020, Australian Super, one of Australia's largest superannuation funds, required a Board Shareholder Representative for Peel Ports, one of its UK investments.

Their requirements for this new board appointment were highly specific. They were seeking a candidate with extensive experience in the UK ports sector, notable board credentials, a comprehensive understanding of Peel Ports' asset base, and a geographical presence in London or Liverpool. Additionally, a critical focus on diversity was essential.

Initially, Australian Super believed they had exhausted all potential candidates, but Omera  Partners  were extremely confident we could uncover an array of talent options and by extension the perfect candidate.

We assembled a team to undertake the task and assigned one of our most experienced Associate Partner researchers to identify a truly exceptional candidate who not only met but exceeded all the Australian Super’s criteria.

Leveraging the comprehensive search tools of our fully in-house research team and their extensive network, our research team  set about conducting a deep dive into senior ports and shipping industry executives in the UK, matching them against the strict brief criteria.

We  won’t divulge exactly how she “struck gold”, but our researcher’s efforts uncovered the uniquely talented, Ms. Margaret Llewellyn, a leading board executive with an extraordinary background in UK shipping.

As a third-generation family member involved in senior roles within the shipping industry, Ms. Llewellyn possessed a wealth of experience, having successfully run a major shipping line. Furthermore, her family had recently divested a relevant business in the sector , establishing a unique connection and deep and unrivalled understanding of the company's operations. And of course, she lived in Liverpool.

Ms Llewellyn was intrigued by board position, making it the perfect alignment of expertise, research, hard work, intuition, and opportunity.

Thanks to Omera Partners' diligent in-house research process and our ability to unearth a true “unicorn”  talent, Australian Super was thrilled to secure Ms. Margaret Llewellyn as a Board Shareholder Representative for Peel Ports.

Her appointment not only met all their criteria but far surpassed their expectations. Not only was her authenticity impressive her low ego high capability attributes made her an exceptional choice.

In summary the combination of Ms. Llewellyn's vast industry experience, strategic insights, and commitment to diversity in an historically traditional industry, contributed to a refreshing change at Board level for Australian Super and Peel Ports.
